St. Ahilles

St. Achilles in Lake Mikri Prespa and apexei 60 km. From Florina and 65 km. From Kastoria. Its name is derived from a corruption of the name of St. Achilles, bishop of Larissa in the 4th century. The island was Roman and Byzantine settlement, who according to inscriptions unearthed identified with the ancient city Lyki. On the island there are several Byzantine churches, of which the most important is the three-aisled basilica of St. Achilles, which dates from the late 10th century AD, built by Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria and which were kept the relics of St. Achilles, when they transported them there the Bulgarian troops from Larissa. Other churches on the island is the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles (11th century), the church of Agios Dimitrios (14th century), the basilica of St. George (15th century) and the church of Panagia Porphyra. The island according to the census of 2011 has 21 residents. It is the second inhabited island in the lake of Greece, after the island of Ioannina.
